Seventy-hour weeks and no overtime pay

Otieno, Mombasa · Hospitality

During high season our hotel kitchen staff worked 12-hour shifts, six days a week. Overtime was "part of the job". When we asked, we were told those who complain will not be called back next season.

How it ended

Ten of us joined KUDHEIHA. The union negotiated back-pay for three months of overtime and a written shift policy.

Legal redress options

Overtime and hours are governed by the Regulation of Wages (General) Order and any CBA. Join or contact your sector union, keep a record of hours worked, and report to the Labour Officer. Victimisation for raising complaints is itself unlawful.
