Fired by a WhatsApp message after five years
Wanjiru, Nairobi · Retail
After five years as a shop supervisor, I received a WhatsApp message at 9pm telling me not to report the next day. No letter, no meeting, no reason. My final pay never came and my manager stopped picking my calls.
How it ended
I reported to the Labour Office, which called the employer for conciliation. They agreed to pay notice pay, unpaid leave and two months' salary as settlement.
Legal redress options
Dismissal without a hearing breaches s.41 of the Employment Act. You can report to the County Labour Officer for conciliation or file at the Employment and Labour Relations Court (ELRC) within 3 years, claiming up to 12 months' salary.
